Diagnostic
- Biometry - a diagnostic eye test performed to measure an eye's size and curvature accurately. This is usually done to make sure that the correct lens implant is given to a patient that will undergo cataract surgery.
- Automated Visual Field (Perimetry) - an eye test done to examine any blind spots or areas of the eye where vision may be weaker. This is usually performed to test for signs of conditions like glaucoma.
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) - this is an advanced imaging eye test that displays high-resolution and cross-sectional images of the eye, specifically, the retina and optic nerve.

Eye Surgery
Glaucoma Surgery
a surgical procedure performed to help lower the pressure inside the eye and help prevent more vision loss due to glaucoma.
Oculoplasty (Orbit Plastic Lacrimal) Surgery
this is a surgical procedure mainly focused on improving the areas around the eyes like the eyelids, tear ducts, and the bone socket that holds the eye. This could be done for medical or aesthetic purposes.
Refractive Cataract Surgery
a surgical eye procedure carried out to remove cataracts and correct existing eye conditions such as astigmatism or nearsightedness.
Minor Eye Surgery
this is typically an outpatient eye surgery procedure done to get rid of small cysts, growths, or other minor issues on or around the eye.
Pterygium Surgery
this is an eye surgery procedure done to remove any harmless growth on the surface of the eye (the conjunctiva) that can cause irritation, discomfort, or affect vision.
Strabismus Surgery
a surgical eye procedure that corrects misaligned eyes (crossed eyes) for better eye alignment and vision.
Vitrectomy Surgery
this eye surgery treats conditions that affect the vitreous (the gel-like substance that fills the eye) and retina where the eye surgeon replaces the vitreous humor with saline solution, gas, or silicone oil to enable the retina to heal properly.
Common Eye Conditions
Here are some eye conditions and diseases that can be treated and managed by our experienced ophthalmologists and eye specialists at Unihealth Southwoods Eye Center.
Cataract
- Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye causing vision loss, usually in older adults. Cataracts develop slowly and may not affect vision early on.
- Symptoms: Cloudy, blurry, or hazy vision, increased sensitivity to light, poor night vision, faded colors
- Treatment: Once diagnosed, our ophthalmologist can remove the cataract growth via surgery and replace the lens with a new, clear, artificial lens safely and effectively.
Glaucoma
- Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve which can eventually cause permanent vision loss or blindness. The damages are usually made due to unusual high pressure in the eye.
- Symptoms: No noticeable symptoms early on; patchy blind spots in peripheral or central view
- Treatment: There is no cure for glaucoma but it is manageable when caught early. Depending on its stage, treatments like prescription eye drops, oral medication, laser procedures, or eye surgery are given to help reduce the pressure inside the eye.
Diabetic Retinopathy
This is a complication brought about by diabetes that affects the blood vessels of the eye, specifically, the retina. Damage in the blood vessels of the eye can lead to blurry vision. Left untreated, it can lead to blindness.
- Symptoms: Spotty vision or seeing "floaters", blurry vision, impaired color perception, empty or dark spot in the middle of vision
- Treatment: For diabetic retinopathy, diabetes must first be managed with your diabetes specialist. Our ophthalmologists can then perform eye injections, laser surgery, or other surgical procedures that can help control or reduce the bleeding or swelling of the retina.
Dry Eye Syndrome
An eye condition where tears cannot provide the right amount or quality of lubrication to the eyes. It can cause discomfort, inflammation, or damage to the eyes.
- Symptoms: Red, itchy eyes, burning sensation, the feeling of having something in your eye, light sensitivity, and blurry vision.
- Treatment: Our ophthalmologists may prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops or lubricants that mimic the composition of tears, in-clinic procedures, or suggest lifestyle changes to help improve this condition.
Refractive Errors
These are the most common eye problems that causes the eye to not be able to focus light properly onto the retina. These eye conditions include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia (natural loss of ability to focus due to age), and astigmatism (blurry vision due to an imperfectly curved lens or cornea).
- Treatment: Our eye specialists may prescribe corrective eyeglasses, contact lenses, or even surgical procedures like LASIK to help correct the shape of the cornea.
Conjunctivitis
also known as pink eye, this is the inflammation or infection of the surface of the eye or the inside of the eyelid. It is caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies, and is highly infectious.
- Symptoms: redness in the whites of the eye, itchy or gritty feeling in the eye, discharge, and tearing.
- Treatment: Depending on the cause, our ophthalmologist may prescribe artificial tears, antibiotic eye drops, allergy medication, or symptom-relieving methods like warm or cold compresses.
