What is Dialysis for?
Your kidney is responsible for filtering out toxins like waste materials, urea, and excess salts or fluids out of your blood. They also regulate your body’s fluids, blood pressure, red blood cell production, electrolytes, and help maintain bone health.
When your kidneys can no longer function as they usually would, typically due to kidney diseases like End-Stage Renal Disease, dialysis is used as a life-saving substitute to perform one of your main kidney functions, which is to filter toxins from your blood.
If dialysis is not performed, your body will accumulate toxins and excess fluid, your electrolytes will be imbalanced, and, ultimately, your vital organs will start to fail, leading to a fatal result.
Services Offered
- Regular Hemodialysis - This most common type of dialysis uses a dialysis machine that pumps blood through a special filter, called Dialyzer, where waste products and excess fluid from the blood is removed.
- Hemodiafiltration (Double Filtration) - This more advanced and intensive type of dialysis uses an HDF machine where a large volume of sterile fluid is used to help "flush out" waste products and excess fluids with larger molecules in the blood that is not as easily cleared out by regular filtration. This makes it possible to remove more toxins of different kinds.

What dialysis equipment is available at Unihealth Southwoods?
- Fresenius 4008S Machine (19 units) - a standard high-flux hemodialysis machine that uses the process of diffusion to effectively remove toxins from the blood. It has standard features such as Online Clearance Monitor (OCM) that assess the effectiveness of dialysis, a DIASAFEplus filter which makes ultrapure dialysis fluid, and an integrated blood pressure monitor to ensure patient safety.
- Fresenius 5008S Machine (4 units) - an advanced hemodialysis machine with an integrated Online Hemodiafiltration (HDF) feature. This machine combines both diffusion (like in standard hemodialysis) and convection, which is a process where a large volume of dialysis fluid is used to remove a wide amount and variety of toxins with larger molecules. This machine also has a built-in system that automatically calculates how much dialysis fluid is needed and identifies if the needle is correctly placed.

What are the common conditions that require dialysis?
- End-Stage Renal Disease - This is the most severe and final stage of Chronic Kidney Disease. In this stage, the kidneys have lost nearly all function and cannot support the body any longer without dialysis or a kidney transplant.
- Acute Kidney Injury - This condition refers to the sudden loss of kidney function due to an infection, injury, or lack of sufficient blood flow. It can usually be treated when caught early. However, when not treated right away or in severe cases, this condition can cause the patient to require dialysis.
- Polycystic Kidney Disease - This is a genetic disorder where fluid-filled cysts grow in the kidneys which can eventually grow larger and damage the kidneys. There is no cure for this disorder, however, the progression can be slowed down with medication and lifestyle changes to preserve the kidney function for as long as possible. If this disorder progresses and lead to End-Stage Renal Disease or Kidney Failure, dialysis or kidney transplant will be needed.
